Canadian Households Wealthier at the End of 2023
Statistics Canada's latest reports offer a glimmer of hope, revealing an uptick in Canadian households' wealth in the last quarter of 2023.
A Positive Year-End for Canadian Households
Thanks to a recovery in financial markets, households' net worth saw a growth of 1.8%. This increase is a result of a bounce back in the values of bonds and stocks after a period of decline in the third quarter. The year 2023 as a whole witnessed a notable rise in both financial and non-financial assets of households, while debt saw its lowest annual increase in decades.
Savings Rate Improvement
The savings rate also experienced a rise, reaching 6.2% in the fourth quarter, indicating improved and cautious financial management among Canadian households.
A Slight Debt Reduction
Household debt slightly decreased, highlighting ongoing efforts to maintain a manageable level of debt relative to disposable income.
Residential Real Estate Stands Firm
Despite some fluctuations, the residential real estate sector remains stable, with a slight decline in the fourth quarter but an overall increase for the year 2023, thanks to good performance in the early part of the year.
