Highlights of the 2024 federal budget

The Federal Budget for 2024 has been revealed, outlining key initiatives aimed at addressing pressing issues while maintaining fiscal responsibility. Here's a summary of the highlights:

Addressing the housing crisis:

Canada introduces its Housing Plan, aiming to create 3.87 million net new homes by 2031 to ensure affordability for all. This includes measures to facilitate renting while saving for a first home and unlocking 250,000 new homes on public lands.

Fairness for younger generations:

To restore fairness for Millennials and Gen Z, the government is making education, housing, and everyday living costs more affordable. This involves increasing student grants and loans, launching a Youth Mental Health Fund, and providing job placement opportunities through the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy.

Investment in innovation and productivity:

Budget 2024 allocates $2.4 billion to maintain Canada's advantage in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and stimulate economic growth. It includes measures to accelerate job growth in the AI sector, boost productivity, and support the Canadian AI ecosystem.

Economic and fiscal outlook:

Canada's economy is surpassing expectations, with projections showing the strongest growth among G7 nations. Despite challenges like higher interest rates, Canada has avoided predicted recessions. Moreover, efforts to maintain low debt-to-GDP ratios ensure long-term fiscal sustainability.

Tax fairness improvements:

To enhance tax fairness, adjustments are made, including increasing the inclusion rate for capital gains for the wealthiest individuals. However, the exemption for capital gains from the sale of principal residences remains unchanged.

In summary, Budget 2024 focuses on tackling current challenges while laying the groundwork for a prosperous and equitable future for all Canadians.
